From moon landings to [space parades](https://www.npr.org/2025/02/27/nx-s1-5308606/planet-parade-sky-february#:~:text=the%20evening%20sky.-,This%20phenomenon%20known%20as%20a%20%22planet%20parade%2C%22%20will%20feature,seen%20together%20in%20the%20sky.), space news is drawing more eyes to the sky. The space industry has experienced significant growth in recent years in both technological advancements and commercial opportunities. Because of this, space is no longer the domain of government agencies alone. Private companies are [leading the way](https://www.forbes.com/councils/forbestechcouncil/2024/06/24/the-transformative-power-of-public-private-partnerships-in-space-exploration/) in space innovation and investors are looking to these companies for new investment opportunities. Here we explore the recent developments in space technology and how investors can tap into this growth.

## The Latest Developments in Space Technology

The space industry has seen some extraordinary developments in recent months, with several key missions capturing global attention.

### 1. Moon Landers and Lunar Exploration

In late 2024, the excitement surrounding lunar exploration reached a new peak with successful landings on the Moon by private companies. [Astrobotic](https://equityzen.com/company/astrobotictechnology/), a private space company, launched its [Peregrine lunar lander](https://www.astrobotic.com/lunar-delivery/landers/peregrine-lander/), marking a milestone in the private sector’s ability to execute complex space missions.

Not to be outdone, other companies like [Intuitive Machines](https://www.intuitivemachines.com/im-1) are also making strides in the race to the Moon. These advancements are paving the way for future lunar exploration and resource mining, with the Moon becoming a [key focus](https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-helping-private-companies-build-business-moon-make-lunar-billions-2023-6) for both governmental and private sector investment.

On February 22, 2025, Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lander successfully landed on the Moon. It became [the first private spacecraft](https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2025/03/blue-ghost-im-2-landings/) to achieve a soft landing. The mission carried out 10 experiments for NASA, including analyzing lunar soil and measuring subsurface temperatures. This landing marked a significant milestone in privatized space exploration. These achievements are signaling the beginning of a new era in lunar exploration as these companies continue to push boundaries. Firefly Aerospace has since [gone public](https://fireflyspace.com/news/firefly-aerospace-announces-pricing-of-upsized-initial-public-offering/) on Nasdaq Global Market in August of 2025.

### 2. Satellite Deployments

Satellite technology is on the rise with companies like [SpaceX](https://equityzen.com/company/spacex/) pioneering large-scale [satellite deployments](https://www.space.com/spacex-starlink-satellites.html) through their Starlink constellation.

These deployments aim to provide global internet access. Satellite networks not only promise to revolutionize global communications - they also create a recurring revenue model for companies involved in the deployment and maintenance of these satellites.

Additionally, innovative technologies like reusable rockets have made space launches more [cost-effective](https://www.kdcresource.com/insights-events/the-rise-of-reusable-rockets-transforming-the-economics-of-space-travel/#:~:text=NASA%20planned%20a%20fully%2Dreusable%20space%20plane%20for,reusable%20solid%20rocket%20boosters%20due%20to%20costs.&text=Unsurprisingly%2C%20it's%20much%20cheaper%20to%20refurbish%20and,cheaper%2C%20with%20a%2030x%20lower%20cost%20overrun.). The scale this enables for satellite deployment creates an environment ripe for further exploration and commercialization.

## Why Space Technology is on the Rise

Several factors are driving increased interest in space technology, particularly in the private sector:

### 1. Government Support and Public-Private Partnerships

While private companies have been taking the lead, government support is also playing a critical role in the growth of the space sector. Agencies like NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) have increasingly [turned to private companies](https://www.nasa.gov/commercial-lunar-payload-services/) for mission execution, satellite launch vehicles, and even research and development.

The recent NASA [Artemis program](https://www.nasa.gov/humans-in-space/artemis/), for example, aims to return humans to the Moon by 2025. This program has progressed through significant contributions from private companies such as [Blue Origin](https://equityzen.com/company/blueorigin/) and SpaceX.

### 2. Technological Innovation and Cost Reduction

The advent of reusable rocket technology has drastically reduced the cost of sending payloads into space. Innovations in propulsion, materials science, and autonomous spacecraft have enabled private companies to undertake ambitious space missions at a fraction of previous costs. These breakthroughs have created new market opportunities.

### 3. Commercialization of Space

As the cost of space exploration decreases, the commercial potential of space is becoming more evident. Companies are now looking to space for everything from satellite broadband to asteroid mining and lunar resource extraction. The commercialization of space resources, such as rare minerals from asteroids or Helium-3 from the Moon, could [transform the global economy](https://hir.harvard.edu/economics-of-the-stars/#:~:text=Despite%20the%20high%20price%20tag,consistent%20source%20of%20clean%20energy.) in the coming decades.

## The Rise of Private Space Companies

With the space industry evolving rapidly, private companies are now leading the charge. These companies are poised to benefit from a booming sector and are attracting significant interest from investors. Here's why:

### 1. High Growth Potential

Private space companies, particularly those involved in satellite deployments, lunar exploration, and next-generation rocket technology, are well-positioned for growth. The global space economy is expected to be worth over [$1 trillion by the 2040s](https://www.airforce-technology.com/news/space-economy-forecasted-to-be-worth-1-trillion-by-2040/#:~:text=Sustainability%2C%20regulation%20and%20militarisation%20cited,the%20economic%20potential%20of%20space.&text=Orbital%20debris%20is%20a%20pressing,Credit%3A%20NASA.).

### 2. Strategic Partnerships and Contracts

Companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin have already secured lucrative contracts with [governments](https://spaceproject.govexec.com/civil/2024/07/top-100-nasa-contractors-2023/398145/) and commercial entities. This is exemplified by [NASA’s SpaceX Crew-9](https://www.nasa.gov/missions/station/iss-research/nasas-spacex-crew-9-scientific-mission-on-space-station-concludes/), which returned to earth after 9 months at the International Space Station. These long-term contracts provide a stable revenue stream that investors typically love. As space infrastructure continues to expand, the demand for private companies’ services is expected to rise dramatically.

### 3. Diverse Investment Opportunities

The space sector is not just about launching rockets. Companies are emerging in areas like satellite manufacturing, space travel, asteroid mining, and even space-based energy. This diversity gives investors a wide array of options to choose from, each with its own risk profile and potential for growth.

While there are many potential opportunities for the Space industry, investing does come with risks. These risks include:

#### 1. High Costs & Long Development Timelines

Space exploration is inherently expensive and requires significant time and resources for project development.

#### 2. Uncertain Return on Investment

Space ventures are often speculative, meaning there's a high degree of uncertainty regarding the potential for a return on your investment.

## How to Invest in SpaceX and Other Private Space Companies

Many of our investors are keenly interested in space. In fact, space is the sixth most popular industry amongst EquityZen investors this year.1 Despite this desire for access, investments in space technology have traditionally been reserved for the largest institutional investors. On top of that, there are few publicly traded [space companies](https://equityzen.com/listings/?industries=space-travel,spaceflight).

Luckily, platforms like EquityZen are providing access to private market investments in space companies. EquityZen allows individual accredited investors to participate in the growth of some privately held space companies with low investment minimums. Whether you’re looking to invest in satellite companies, space logistics providers, or next-gen space exploration firms, EquityZen provides a more accessible route to participation.

## Conclusion

The space industry is no longer the exclusive domain of national space agencies. With private companies making major strides in exploration, commercialization, and innovation, the sector is attracting increasing attention from investors. As space technology becomes cheaper and more commercial, private companies stand ready to benefit. At the same time, it is important to consider the high costs, long development timelines and uncertainty for returns that comes with investing in space technology.

For investors, the growing interest in space presents unique opportunities to capitalize on a rapidly expanding industry, while not without risk. With the rise of space technology, now is the time to look up — and consider how you can invest in the companies shaping the future of space exploration.
